SDEC Innovators’ Showcases 2024-2025

Ignite Your Imagination and Spark Your Creativity

During the 2024-2025 school year, SDEC focused on fostering a sustainable culture of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programming across all schools. This system-wide initiative aligns with the redesigned curriculum for Junior Kindergarten through grade 12 and equips students with integrated, practical skills. It promotes design thinking and real-world applications, emphasizing hands-on, experiential learning through problem-based approaches. This prepares students to become innovative problem-solvers and critical thinkers, which is a key aspect that distinguishes the STEM program.

In December 2024, Mackenzie Mountain School proudly hosted the inaugural Innovators’ Showcase. A group of six students per community, representing various grades came together in Norman Wells to share their learning experiences and innovative ideas. This platform not only allowed students to collaborate with peers from different school levels and communities but also inspired them to apply their knowledge toward potential solutions for challenges faced in the North. The success of this event encourages us to look forward to even more impactful showcases in the future.

In May 2025, a second showcase was held at Chief T’Selehye School. Once again, groups of six students from each school gathered in Fort Good Hope. Their first challenge was to find solutions for managing caribou populations to ensure sustainability for the future. This was followed by challenges related to infrastructure design, water filtration and purification, fun cardboard creations, and finally, a land-based gathering focused on respectful harvesting.

SDEC wishes to congratulate all participants and the staff involved. These events require organization and time, and we sincerely appreciate the efforts of our dedicated staff. Their commitment is instrumental in fostering innovation and creativity and equipping our students with the skills needed to tackle complex challenges in their future careers. We are deeply respectful of their hard work and dedication.

Stay tuned as two additional communities will host next year's showcase, with a strong focus on community engagement. We eagerly look forward to your participation and support in these exciting events.
